PURPOSE & HISTORY

A Visible Place to Remember and Honor

Two Harbors played an important role during U.S. conflicts by supplying steel mills of the Lower Great Lakes with approximately 90% of the iron ore needed to build the tools of war, including tanks, trucks, and planes.

The proposed memorial will be built in Two Harbors, where its location and visibility will add to the experience of both residents and visitors. It will serve as a meaningful place to reflect on the service, sacrifice, and history connected to Lake County veterans.

The association has also proposed that public works displays, such as the World War II cannon, the Iron Ore Ball (which commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the first iron ore shipment in 1884), and other memorial pieces, be moved near this new memorial to create a stronger and more unified place of remembrance.
